Off the Menu: Asian America takes us on a road trip across the US in an exploration of how family, history, faith, and geography shape our relationships to food and our communities.

Lee travels from Houston, Texas to from Oak Creek, Wisconsin to Oahu, Hawaii seeking stories that reflect an evolving Asian Pacific America and the role food plays in peoples’ lives. “We wanted to find unexpected stories that embodied the Asian American experience,” says Lee. “Asian America is already such a vast, complex, and contested idea. Focusing on food was a way to explore the deeper connections of culture, family, and ideas of authenticity and adaptation that link us all."

Lisa Feldman Barrett is a distinguished professor of psychology at Northeastern University and author of the recently published “How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain.” In this video, the CrossFit Journal’s Andréa Maria Cecil sits down with Barrett to discuss the neuroscience behind “superaging” and what role exercise plays.

A superager, Barrett explains, is someone older than 60 who “has a memory that functions indistinguishably from (that of) a 25-year-old.”

The parts of the brain that regulate memories also contribute to emotional and physical health, Barrett says. The best thing you can do to improve your emotional health, she suggests, is improve your physical health: get enough sleep, exercise vigorously and eat well.

And, she notes, humans are social creatures, so working out in a group setting can also encourage healthy behavior. We help regulate each other’s nervous systems, Barrett explains, so exercising together can motivate people to make better choices.

In Season 1 of “Road to Conviction,” we met Fletcher Tholin. Then 26, Tholin found CrossFit while incarcerated. After his release, Tholin made CrossFit the foundation of his life, and it's changed his outlook and his goals.

In the third episode of Season 2, Tholin makes a special trip to Crystal Lake, Illinois, to visit old friend and training partner Justin Dewing at his new gym, StormFront CrossFit.

Dewing, a 2014 Regionals competitor, and business partner Michael Compton talk with Tholin about what he needs to do to take his training to the next level.

“To be a Regional athlete, you have to work on your weaknesses 80 percent of the time,” Compton says.

Tholin says he values Dewing as a training partner because Dewing never lets him off the hook when things get challenging. When Tholin tries to swap the ring muscle-ups in their workout for an easier movement, for example, Dewing holds him accountable and makes him finish the workout as planned.

Tholin appreciates the pressure. “I didn’t come up here to work on shit I was awesome at,” he says.
